Eupen's last-minute goal ends Club's Cup aspirations

A cold night at the Kehrweg, where Club saw its Cup aspirations go to waste after a 3-2 defeat vs locals Eupen. The hosts took a double lead through Garcia and Onyekuru 2-0, but Club drew level after Vanaken and Vossen found their way to the nets. Blondelle, however, did not feel for prolongations, firing in the winner in added time.

No changes to the team that had beaten KV Mechelen on the weekend. On the other side of the pitch, Ocansey was out injured, and Lazare and Blondelle both started on the bench. Still, it was Eupen who steamrolled into the game. The hosts, a technical bunch, claimed the ball and jotted some nice combinations on Club's side of the pitch. A Limbombe header was all Club put against Jeffren, Al-Abdulrahman and Sylla trying their luck for Eupen. The pressure could not be withheld, however: Vormer brought down Luis Garcia, whose free kick left Butelle motionless as it sailed in.

A blow for Club, sloppy in its build-up and unable to make it to the opponent's danger zone. The best chance befell to Denswil, who saw his curled free kick go to Poulain, but the Eupen defense beat the latter to the ball just in time.

Not the best of performances for Laurens De Bock, who remained in the dressing room at half time, offering Dion Cools another shot at left back. Three minutes into the second half, however, Henry Onyekuru saw his time come, going past five Club defenders, and beating Butelle with a cool-headed shot: a beauty. Mission impossible, it seemed, for Club, but hope resurged when Vanaken made it 2-1 from a free kick. Eupen looked taken aback, and Preud’homme brought in Wesley for some added power up front. The substitiont paid off straight away: the Brazilian found Cools, whose cross was tucked in by man-in-form Vossen. 2-2 and all to play for.

Those who thought Club would now also go over Eupen were wrong. The home team produced some more threats, and a header looked goalbound but met with the crossbar. It looked like the matter would have to be decided through prolongations, but Siebe Blondelle sent Eupen partying as he took a cleared corner in one go and fired it in. No third consecutive Cup Final for Club, stranding in the Round of 16.
