Meunier called up for Red Devils
National head coach Marc Wilmots announced his squad for the friendly games against Colombia and Japan. Thomas Meunier has been called up for the first time.
Timmy Simons and Thomas Meunier are part of Belgium's national team. For the first time since 2011 (Belgium - Kazachstan, with Hoefkens and Odjidja) Club Brugge have two Red Devils in the first team. For 22-year-old Meunier it's his first international call-up for Belgium's first team.
National head coach Marc Wilmots: "We have been keeping an eye on Thomas for quite a while and we are convinced about his qualities. Now we just have to see how well he fits in the team. Meunier, who is definitely an option for the future, has everything to become a big player on right-back. He is well-disciplined and is great in passing the ball forward."
“I am thrilled and very happy with my selection. Just training with all these talentful players will be good for me to improve as a defender.”
Thomas Meunier was informed about his call-up after this morning's training session. "I'm thrilled and very happy with my selection. I hadn't expected it at all, but I see this as a reward for all the hard work."
The right full-back is nevertheless realistic. "I don't expect to play right away. This team has been playing well for a while and I'm new. But just training with all these talentful players will be good for me to improve as a defender."
