Philippe Clement: “Loyal to our system”

For the first time this season, Club Brugge suffered the taste of defeat. Paris Saint Germain with a rampant Kylian Mbappé proved much too strong for Blauw-Zwart, but this didn't keep coach Philippe Clement from being proud of his troops.

“We didn't keep to what we said before the game when they scored their first goal, and we just hadn't them that second goal. But we did combine well at times. Unfortunately what was missing was a good control or the correct kick. Keep in mind that this is still a young outfit, with many playing at this level for the first time. I'm particularly proud that we are here althogether. You can take them on playing with ten in defense, but you can just as well concede three or four. And that doesn't teach you anything. But now we saw some really good stuff, even if my group still needs to learn and swallow the disappointment and just keep going. Our opponents are just teeming with qaulity, and you shouldn't give them just a sliver of a chance. Mbappé is an unusual talent, one of the best strikers in the world.”

With Vormer out on suspension, Clement had a surprise up his sleeve in lining up Charles De Ketelaere. “Charles showed several positive things today He's only just 18, so these are valuable lessons for him. What matters to me most is that we stuck to our system. Their coach said that we should be proud of how we gave them a really hard time. A mental blow? Not in the least. I know what my players are capable of, they have shown that in the past couple of months. On Sunday we want to broaden the gap with Standard. And fortunately for us they don't have Mbappé.” (SF)
