Club bids 2016 farewell with a 2-1 win vs Mouscron
Club Brugge has ended the year in style, beating Mouscron 2-1. The visitors had taken the lead through Nkaka, but van Rhijn and Vossen made sure the points stayed at Jan Breydel.
One new name in Club's Starting XI: Bjorn Engels came on for Benoît Poulain. The hosts were eager to score an early goal, and it took a solid Delac to deny Izquierdo's deflected shot and headers by Cools and Denswil.
Against the run of play, however, Mouscron scored from its very first chance. Nkaka was offered too much space inside the box, and headed in the opener neatly past Butelle. A bit later Trezeguet also tested Butelle's reflexes with a hard shot, but without success. Club seemed taken aback, but managed to get up from the blow. Two more saves were needed by Delac, keeping Vanaken from equalising.
One goal up, the visitors pulled back as a whole, limiting the space for Blauw-Zwart. Club's main threats rolled in from the left wing through Izquierdo, but the Columbian was unlucky in his finishing: his first attempt chipped off a defender into corner kick, and a bit later his shot was aimed straight at Delac. Just before half -time, however, Vanaken put Izquierdo through on goal, but Delac once again saved the day. The rebound by Vanaken was tapped into corner kick by an attentive defender.
Blauw-Zwart's equaliser was up in the air, but just after half time Club had a narrow escape. A great action by Trezeguet ended up with Nkaka, who saw his shot meet with the crossbar. Club reacted with two chances: Delac first pawed away Engels hard shot, and moments later Refaelov's free kick sailed centimeters wide.
Club got what it deserved fifteen minutes into the second half. Engels was brought down outside the box, and van Rhijn headed for the free kick that followed. Even from long range, his attempt surprised Delac, seeing it slip through his hands in goal. Club was now ablaze, and minutes later the 2-1 followed, and again van Rhijn played a fair share in the goal, producing a superb cross to tee up Vossen to tap in the 2-1.
In the final stages of the game, Blauw-Zwart had a couple more opportunities to add a third: Vormer and Izquierdo were unable to frame teir attempts, and Delac made up for his error by denying Cools and again Izquierdo. The win takes Club back to the top of the league, two points ahead of Anderlecht, and four ahead of Zulte Waregem.
