The upcoming game

The first official match of the new season is the away match in the second preliminary round of the UEFA Europa Conference League. Danish AGF Aarhus is the opponent at Jan Breydel. It is the 10th time Club has faced a Danish club in Europe.

This is Club Brugge KV's 344 European match and AGF Aarhus' 58th. It is the 39th confrontation between a Belgian and Danish club in Europe.

Club begins its 52nd European campaign, for Aarhus it is the 19th. Club and Aarhus are part of 90 clubs active in this preliminary round. In total, Club must survive 3 preliminary rounds to get into the group stage of the Conference League. It is Club Brugge's first time in this competition.

After the Jaarbeursstedenbeker, the Cup Winners' Cup, the UEFA Cup, the European Cup for Champions, the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, this is the seventh European Cup in which Club makes its appearance. Only the UEFA Intertoto Cup has Blauw-Zwart never played.

It is the third edition of the UEFA Conference League which in previous years had AS Roma (Ita) and West Ham United FC (Eng) as final winners.

The opponent

AGF Aarhus played only once against a Belgian opponent. In the UEFA Cup against KSV Waregem then both matches were lost.

Aarhus Gymnastikforening (AGF) is one of the oldest clubs in Denmark. The club's soccer branch was founded in 1902. The club celebrated the Danish national championship 5 times: three consecutive times in 1955, 1956 and 1957 and then again in 1960 and 1986. In terms of number of cup wins, they share the national record with FC København of 9 cup wins. The last Danish cup stung up AGF in 1996.

Two players played for both Club Brugge and AGF Aarhus:

  • Midfielder Anders Nielsen played for Club in the 1996-97 season. The Dane was able to score 6 times in 21 matches. After a period at AA Gent and AC Omonia (Cyp), he played half a year for AGF Aarhus in 2002. At the Danish club he was able to score 2 times in 10 matches.
  • Defender Jim Larsen played in youth for AGF. Later in his career, Club came to get him at Rosenborg BK. He was a crowd favorite at Club but did not make it past 17 matches due to injury problems.

Top scorer at the club last season was Danish striker Patrick Mortensen. He hit 16 goals in 32 matches. With Yann Aurel Bissck (Ger/Cmr), Nicolai Poulsen (Den), Gift Links (Rsa) and Kevin Yakov (Irq/Swe), there were 4 assist kings, each putting 3 teammates on their way to a goal.

AGF Aarhus started the new league season 1 week earlier than Club. On the opening day of play, promoters Vejle BK were guests at Ceres Park. The home team was right on target after a 1-0 win. After 23 minutes, newcomer Tobias Bech was able to open the scoring on a pass from Patrick Mortensen. Despite a red card on the hour at Vejle, Aarhus could not extend the score further (1-0). AGF is thus in the lead after the 1st match day with FC Copenhagen, FC Midtjylland and Brøndby IF, among others.

Milestones

Michal Skoras, Igor Thiago and Hugo Vetlesen can possibly play their first official match for Club.

Brandon Mechele may play his 60th European match for Club Brugge. Only 6 players played more often in Europe for Blauw-Zwart than the Bredenaar (Gert Verheyen, Timmy Simons, Dany Verlinden, Franky Van der Elst, Philippe Clement and Gaëtan Englebert).

Michal Skoras can play the 30th European match of his career. The previous 29 he played all for Poland's KKS Lech Poznan.

For Denis Odoi, it could be the 25th match in his European career. He played 9 for RSC Anderlecht, 8 for KSC Lokeren OV and 7 for Club Brugge KV.
