Club Brugge files complaint with Professional Referee Department

Jupiler Pro League

Club Brugge filed a complaint with the Professional Referee Department this afternoon following the offside play in the KV Mechelen - Club Brugge fixture.

Club refers to the moment in the 72nd minute of the game when a validly scored goal by Club Brugge was wrongly disallowed for offside and where the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) did not intervene to correct the wrongful decision. Not only in the interest of Club Brugge but also in the interest of the professionalization of Belgian soccer, it seems important to Club that this error does not remain without consequence. Club can accept that human error happens on the pitch. In this case, however, it is not a human error but a professional-technical error. VAR was created to remove human error from the game in match-determining phases, through technical tools. When the VAR makes such a match-determining error, which is not open to interpretation, it should be considered a professional-technical error and thus, if necessary, the match should be replayed.

Club also contacted the Competitions Manager of KBVB in this case, who informed us that no referee's report was made because there was no incident, which is fundamentally incorrect. Club Brugge continues to ask for the release of communications in the VAR room as well as those between the VAR and the referee corps.
