THE GAME
Last Saturday, Club Brugge played its first pre-season match against SV Zulte Waregem. Over 5,000 spectators showed up at The NEST.
Ronny Deila gave a lot of young players a chance. The average age of all players in action was 20.55. Newcomer Igor Thiago made his friendly debut. The Brazilian looked on target right from the start, but his goal was disallowed as he was deemed to have strayed offside.
Saturday afternoon at 1 pm Club plays his second game behind closed doors in its own Basecamp against K. Beerschot VA. In the meantime, some internationals have joined the group and may get their first minutes.
THE OPPONENT
It's also the second pre-season game for Beerschot, after losing their first 1-0 to OH Leuven.
Beerschot, relegated in 2022, hoped to make a quick return to the highest level last season in the Challenger Pro League. It closed the 2022 calendar year as the leader, but had to release its grip after the turn of the year. So the title fight became a duel between RWDM and SK Beveren.
There was already a lot of transfer activity at the Mannekes this summer. These players already left the club: former Club NXT player Thibo Baeten (Go Ahead Eagles), Dante Rigo (Grenoble Foot), Mike Vanhamel (La Louvière), Jan Van den Bergh (NAC Breda) and Ilias Sebaoui (Feyenoord). The contracts of Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui and Abraham Okyere expired. Léo Seydoux (KVC Westerlo) and Nicksoen Gomis (Sheffield United) returned after their loan spells. Frédéric Frans retired and became the head coach of the U21 and assistant of the first team at Beerschot.
There are two newcomers as for now: 21-year-old striker Simion Michez (Cmr/Bel) signed from from RSCA Futures and midfielder Welat Cagro (Bel) joined as a free agent after a period at NAC Breda (Ned).
The coach at Beerschot is still Austrian Andreas Wieland.
Beerschot is preparing for the first league match on Aug. 11, away against the RSCA Futures and the 6th preliminary round of the Croky Cup (Sept. 10).
It is the fourth consecutive season that Beerschot is one of the teams we face during out season preparation. The past three years we drew level twice and last year Ferran Jutglà and Mathis Servais scored to give us a 2-1 win.
