Hans Vanaken: “A clean sheet takes us a long way”

Croky Cup

An emphatic win for Hans Vanaken's side in the Cup. After the break, Club kept pushing forward, resulting in two Thiago goals to make it 4-0 on the night.

"You should never be content with 2-0, you never know Simon might have trouble getting to a ball and it might just as well be game on. You need to retain your focus and keep the opponent from getting their hopes up. It's special to be playing guys you have played with so long too. We drove to the club together so many times, and also met up outside of football. They're good friends, and that's always special."

These past weeks, Igor Thiago has shown he's the goal scorer Club was in need of. “You need to be on the exact right spot to tap it in. He's the type of guy who works very hard and then gets rewarded. It took some adjusting, and he's still struggling a bit with English. He made his way to the group easily, though, he's a very friendly guy. He just gets along with everyone. You can see that it's bound to turn out well. Right now he's scoring left right and center, and it all starts with that bit of confidence. When the balls are flying in, a forward might be off.”

It looks like Club has got its engine rolling, and holding on that clean sheet must be instrumental in this. “We have so many qualities up front that we manage to score in every game. A clean sheet already takes us a long way. It was by conceding silly goals that we sometimes lost. We handled that, maintaining our organisation and working hard for one another. That's six consecutive clean sheets now, and that's a positive thing. Here at Club internally, we kept our heads cool, as we knew just what was going wrong. The devil's in the details, and those games really could have turned out differently. But maybe that's also that bit of luck you need to have sometimes. Right now, we sometimes leave the ball to our opponent, in order to free up some space and then go for attack.”

Later on this week, there's the draw for the next round in the Croky Cup. "If you want to bring home that cup, you're bound to meet with the stronger teams. Maybe in the next round. We take on every game with the intention of winning it. We will be taking it on in the same way we did in the past couple of weeks.” (KN)
